Wednesday

Ashihara – horrible warmup running up the hill and round the stairs and partner strength stuff – wheelbarrow  for 20 mins, situps, leg raises, pushups etc. HOT.

Then various partner combinations, sabaki. I just went slowly with each one to start with which worked well. Sensei pointed out my stance as attacker   was too strong and forward, too vulnerable to a shoot, which he kindly demonstrated lol. Repeat of Rick’s takedown from the clip, connects to the Sanchin opening move.

love the reference to shooting in a stand up style , good stuff , Sanchin stance that hasnt been stretched out is pretty good here , I often stand with the lead foot just the length of the foot forward of the other and about hip width apart .

But really the only way to stop a shoot is to have your shoulders forward of your hips and feet , the above is the compromise IMHO .

Im becoming a beleiver , if you leg is forward then you can be taken down by a good shooter .

I think Uechi is a clinch stand up grappling style predominantly . One range closer than ashihara

    Eye to eye.

    Eyes disapear.

    They are shooting.

    No other reason.

    React.

    Sprawl.

    Strike.

    Control the chin.

Marcus – yes agreed, Uechi one range closer than Ashihara predominantly (and about 100 miles closer than the other thing lol). And yet Ashihara is nothing without sheering and tucked elbows…some huge crossovers. And Sensei Mark is borrowing from huge experience across at least four styles…he reads stance like a comic book…
My simple balanced forward stance is useful and dangerous simultaneously – the Systema principle that every weak point has strengths, every strong position has weaknesses which can be exploited. So I want to see what happens to the shoot with a Systema mindset…

Rick – The eyes – excellent, exactly what happened. Sprawl forward? The head would be vulnerable as the attacker comes forward – strike to the head, grab and sheer, using chin as a lever?

Some times we just have to be shown where the switch is. :)
