system distortion

January 13th, 2010 by laird

Worked on absorbing shots, absorbing and returning, absorbing and picking up a limb.  Some NLD, some more lock principles explored. Worked on  teaching Carl to control EBG by grabbing a mit full of face. The lads too gentle.

We also worked on something that made my shoulders kind of tight…no idea what . Looking forward to intu flow on Wednesday.

the nonviolent side of F.E.U.R.

January 9th, 2010 by laird

Well we have trained since August. I’ll try to post to the blog with a bit more frequency.

We had a relatively easy night tonight, we didn’t break a sweat. One of my goals this year is to develop a few seminars. Complete with manuals and clips. I suspect it will become a two year project.

“Self defense for women.” ………………………….(Targets women)

“Surviving in a violent world”………………………(Targets the unisex market)

“So you’re a doorman, now what?”…………………(Targets bar staff)

“Tactical Response for Law enforcement officers”…(Targets LEO’s )

So tonight I taught Carl some new shoulder locks, wrist locks, finger locks, etc. We spent a lot of time on cuffing drills. We spent some time on small circle jujitsu. We worked arm bars. All of this stating in the upright grapples some of it going to the ground. Didn’t break a sweat but I suspect he might be sore any way.

It was a good night but we are going to have to revisit this material frequently

Tuesday, a night off

August 13th, 2009 by laird

Had planned to train Tuesday. Training partner bailed on me. Turns out the lad went camping in the mountains and got kind of lost for half the day. Spent a long time wandering around bashing branches off trees trying to hack his way back to the road. Eventually he found it again and was only two kilometers from his vehicle. But he was kind of worn out after the event so I gave him the night off and just spent the time editing some film. Guess I’ll have to put some bruises on him on Thursday.

No Sweat!

August 8th, 2009 by laird

Yup didn’t even work up a sweat training last night. We mostly worked on kicking in the clinch. Ended up just leaning the heavy bag against a brick wall and giving it hell! My job was to hold it from toppling over.
Carl’s got the idea now and throws some wicked kicks inside. Once he figured out the hips he even got the side kick working in the clinch.
I gave him his question for his black belt test last night so now he’s got something to think about.

We finished the night with about 30 minutes of sticky hands, elbow flow and trapping. That’s the only work I actually did last night. Going to focus more on my self tonight! Problem with teaching is you don’t get all the work in you need at times.
We’ve decided to train FEUR on nights with a T from now on.
That leaves the other days free for me!

Lazy day

August 4th, 2009 by laird

Well the rain has cooled things off and those ignorant folks have returned to the city. Maybe we’ll get a rest from them for a while……fat chance the wee women tells me we are going shopping in the city tomorrow.  Ohhh well I do need some hunting supplies.

Almost slept thru class tonight, but I woke up on the couch in the nick of time. I arrived a few minutes late; turns out neither of us had much energy. We shot the breeze for a while and then Carl worked on his kata’s and I installed a new battery in one of the trucks. I spent a bit of time working on his kata and that’s all she wrote.

I suspect we both just needed a day of rest.

Not keeping up with the blog

August 1st, 2009 by laird

Not keeping up with the training either. We have only trained 3 days in the past 2 weeks. I bailed on tonight, I worked 6 am to 9 pm.

Friggin long weekends suck, but they prove to be great evidence of what an easy to get along with forgiving bloke I am. For today if I was anything less,  a few hundred ignorant tourists would have been left withering on the ground!

Carl’s been short at work and we went thru a week of hellish hot temperatures and we both just laid low.

When we did get off our asses and train we spent most of the time working on flow thru energy,  attachment and trapping and  entry via the elbow. I’ll post some clips on Ricks forum. Hmmm Guess we can call this my bong phase …no not that kind of bong the martial one!

Spent some time on Carl’s kata…they are coming along nicely. Trying to intergrat kata with his understanding of application.  I’ve reached the point that I’ve decided to not teach kata to future students but rather to have them develop forms from the applications they train. This way the kata will be truly theirs and and something they can always utilize as oppose to learn to utilize.

Their is a silver lining in every cloud. Had a conversation with a Warden/police officer today…I know a few of them. This one expressed an interest in karate training and apparently I have a bit of a reputation as a scary guy in the  community. Well I can’t do anything about the insecure folks in my community but I’d be pleased to welcome a LEO or a few them to the training circle. This is something I’ve been looking for people who have a real desire to train what really works. So I’ll try and nuture the relationship and cross arms with the guy…see if I can get a few of the lads to come play!

ohh yeah weight is down to 208 from 238 in December. Not from hard work and exercise, just  eat different because of disease.  Got to get to a point where I can train hard!  Weight loss does help with this goal.

July 14th

More or the same , trained elbow flow , catching jabs, cross arm cover as entry and attack.  mostly strategic positioning. Did some arm conditioning and club bell work too.

New meds are allowing me to strike again elbow is less swollen and sore.  Felt good to hit someone again. However the meds are causing other medical conditions to flare up so I may have to go off them. Got a cortizone shot in the joint as well, appears to be helping.

The forearms sure took a beating with all elbow entries we trained, I had forgotten these anti inflamatory meds thinned the blood and caused bruising.

I’ve come to the conclussion that meds and doctors will do little to help, cure lies in quality nutrition and exercise.  Time to do intu flow daily and time to put some miles on the old body.

Can’t wait to train FEUR again, having a blast these days.

Light club bell warm up.

some kata

Then about an hour of cross arm cover in boxing.. transitioning into elbow flow and close quarter work with the main focus being entry and retaining captured ground. Basically trying to marry Uechi and boxing. Sanchin guard and sword and sheild as a postural structure and an entry to lines of force.

Productive class. Carl is now starting to put it all together. He is begining to develop the patience to permit his opponet to offer the entry.

Lets get started

July 10th, 2009 by laird

Well it’s been about six months time to get started.

The name….I heard Jim Maloney once tell a student “no sense polishing an apple if it’s rotten inside”. The guy stunk of smoke. The advice kind of stuck with me.

Yet today I am rotten on the inside. I suffer from a few diseases that go hand in hand with aging.

So this blog will deal with training on the downside…training when you are less than you once were. Training when disease inhibits progress.

I will endevour to discover if the apple can be shined when the body is less than 100%
